Since the launch of the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone (hereinafter referred to as the "Shenzhen Cooperation Zone"), the country has actively promoted the Shenzhen Cooperation Zone to build a world-class traditional Chinese medicine production base and innovation highland, and more and more young people in the Greater Bay Area have devoted themselves to the traditional Chinese medicine industry.

Southern Finance: Zhuhai UM Institute of Science and Technology is the first and only industry-university-research demonstration base established by the University of Macau in the Greater Bay Area. Please share with us the industry-university-research situation.
Wang Chunming: The University of Macau has three national key laboratories, covering the fields of microelectronics, traditional Chinese medicine and smart cities. Pearl Research Institute has currently received more than 100 scientific research funds with a total amount of more than 60 million yuan, and has more than 70 commercial projects with a total amount of more than 50 million yuan. It has built joint laboratories with many companies.
Pearl Research Institute currently has 6 R&D centers and an advanced training center, including Microelectronics R&D Center, Advanced Materials R&D Center, Smart City R&D Center, Translational Medicine R&D Center, Chinese Medicine R&D Center, and Humanities and Social Sciences Research Center. Many research results have been transformed. For example, in the field of microelectronics, it has signed an industrial alliance plan with relevant companies in the industry to regularly exchange technology and promote the implementation of industry and technology. In addition, it also conducts joint talent training and establishes joint laboratories; in the fields of Chinese medicine and translational medicine, Zhuyan The hospital has signed a joint laboratory agreement with two well-known companies in the field of regenerative medicine and organoid culture; the foam concrete technology of Professor Sun Guoxing of the Advanced Materials Research and Development Center has been fully realized in construction sites and municipal construction in Zhuhai and other regions. Qin’ao’s traditional Chinese medicine policies complement each other’s advantages
Southern Finance: Since the launch of the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone, more than 220 companies have been registered in the Guangdong-Macao Cooperation Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park. In terms of traditional Chinese medicine research, what opportunities and advantages do you think Hengqin and Macao have?
Wang Chunming: As far as traditional Chinese medicine is concerned, there are many advantages and opportunities for Shenzhen-Hebei District and Macao. The first is that the "Hengqin Plan" is in line with Macao's traditional Chinese medicine policy. It is very important to attract talents and enterprises to stay in the Shenzhen-Hebei District and promote the diversification of Macao's economic industry. Macao's land area and industrial base have certain limitations, but Hengqin can provide many conditions to realize cooperation between Hengqin and Macao.
The second is that the Hengqin Plan and Macao policies complement each other in terms of traditional Chinese medicine. Macao itself has accumulated scientific research in traditional Chinese medicine, and Macao society also has a tradition of trusting and using traditional Chinese medicine. The Macao SAR government has clearly prioritized supporting the development of traditional Chinese medicine science and technology in its planning. If Hengqin has preferential policies and supporting support, it will be very good for scientific researchers, enterprises and practitioners in Macao.
The third is that the "Hengqin Plan" can give full play to Macao's advantages as a "bridge" in terms of scientific research and policy. Macao's traditional Chinese medicine research itself plays a very good role as a bridge, integrating the essence of traditional Chinese medicine with modern technology. In addition, Macao has newly established the Food and Drug Administration, which is mainly responsible for the registration and supervision of traditional Chinese medicine. The state supervises the registration of traditional Chinese medicine in Macao and cooperates with the mainland's drug regulatory authorities to provide a lot of policy support.
In the future in Hengqin, we will use preferential policies to promote interactive cooperation between medical researchers and companies in Hengqin and Macao.
Accelerate the cultivation of comprehensive talents
Southern Finance: The "Guangdong Province Implementation Plan for the Construction of a National Traditional Chinese Medicine Comprehensive Reform Demonstration Zone" has provided a lot of support for the development of Macao's traditional Chinese medicine industry. Please talk about how universities should seize opportunities and promote the development of the traditional Chinese medicine industry?
Wang Chunming: Recently, the Guangdong Provincial Government issued the "Implementation Plan for the Construction of a National Comprehensive Reform Demonstration Zone for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Guangdong Province", which mentioned accelerating the integrated development of "industry, academia and research" in traditional Chinese medicine and creating a talent highland. In the context of the national strategy, the opportunities and development of Zhuyan Institute are synchronized, and young people who are interested in developing in the field of traditional Chinese medicine also have great potential. In the future planning of the Pearl Research Institute, the first direction is to continue to support UM researchers in participating in national scientific research projects. The second direction is to promote the development of industry, academia and research. We are establishing joint laboratories with more companies in the fields of smart cities, biomedicine and other fields to jointly promote the implementation of our industrial research. The third direction is talent cultivation. We hope to cultivate more comprehensive professionals who can stay in Shenzhen He District and build Macao's industrial diversification.
Create an innovative ecosystem conducive to traditional Chinese medicine research and development
Southern Finance: The research and development of traditional Chinese medicine has a long way to go. How do you think we can get more ambitious young people to devote themselves to this field of scientific research?
Wang Chunming: The first level is from the perspective of the research and development of the entire biopharmaceutical industry. This is a "high, big and long" industry, that is, high risk, large investment, and long cycle. It needs the government, enterprises, scholars, etc. to jointly build a good and effective industry. An environment conducive to innovation, entrepreneurship and the development of traditional Chinese medicine science and technology.
For example, we now have a national key laboratory for quality research on traditional Chinese medicines. We have recently established a Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Development Center and will soon establish a Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Testing Center to better transfer research results to the production line. The School of Health Sciences has also established a tumor-related research center under the Ministry of Education. At the cutting-edge science center, new methods in tumor prevention or treatment are gradually being industrialized, emerging from the laboratories of UM professors. The second level is to establish a good communication environment between university professors and entrepreneurs. In fact, there will be some barriers or challenges in the transformation of global industry-university-research science and technology. For example, communication is one aspect. Academic research and technological transformation have different modes of thinking. Scientists must communicate closely with entrepreneurs. It is not easy for any university's industry-university-research institute to move from the laboratory to the market. How to start from the demand side and solve the demand-side problems at the research level is a difficult problem. Therefore, communication between university professors and entrepreneurs is very important.
The third level is to encourage and help talents to transform scientific research results. It is hoped that regular communication channels between universities and enterprises can be improved. At the beginning of research, preparations can be made for scientific research talents to enter industry-university-research transformation or enter the market. We should make predictions in advance on aspects such as the deployment of intellectual property patents, and then negotiate with enterprises. Make an analysis of the expectations of both parties to help the growth of talents and enterprises. After the product enters the market, there will also be a continuous support system from universities and government agencies, which is very helpful for industry, academia and research.
